Una economía es un sistema coordinado de conocimiento distribuido. La evolución económica tiene lugar al crecer el conocimiento y al cambiar la estructura del sistema. Este ensayo se ocupa del papel de los mercados en este proceso. Tradicionalmente, la teoría de los mercados no ha sido una característica central de la economía evolutiva. Al parecer, esto se debe a la visión ortodoxa de los mercados como mecanismos de procesamiento de información para encontrar equilibrios. Pero en la evolución económica los mercados son en realidad mecanismos de estructuración del conocimiento. ¿En qué consiste entonces la relación entre conocimiento, información, mercados y mecanismos? Sostengo que una economía evolutiva de los mercados, a la manera de Loasby (1999), necesita una formulación clara de estas relaciones. Sugiero que una concepción del conocimiento y los mercados en términos de una teoría de grafos de sistemas complejos, procura precisamente esto.
