Abstract

This study analyzes wheter Mexico's economic growht has decoupled forn CO2 emissions between 1895 and 2023. Based on theoretical approaches to decoupling and green growth, it employs Tapio's method, Kaya's identity, LMDI decomposition, and econometric techniques such as cointegration and VECM models. The results show that, in the medium term, GDP and emissions grew similarly (expansive coupling), while in the long term, emissions grew more significantly than the economy (expansive negative decoupling). Although energy efficiency improved and emissions intensity decreased, total emissions continued  to rise due to economic and demographic expansion. The study concludes that Mexico has not structurally decoupled economic growht from emissions, which poses significant challenges for the country's climate and energy policy.
